Perth Zoo Wetlands Enclosure & Penguin Pool Refurbishment

Location 20 Labouchure Rd, South Perth WA
Client Perth Zoo
Date Completed 2011

The project involved the demolition and removal of the existing netting enclosure, screw piles, timber decking, and fencing. New works included the installation of screw piles, concrete footings, limestone retaining walls, and structural steel framing to support stainless steel wire cables and 4,800 m² of stainless steel netting. Viewing platforms were reinstated using recycled jarrah decking, new trees were planted, and the Penguin Pool and water filtration system were refurbished and upgraded.

One of the main challenges was the site’s accessibility, as the design aimed to preserve as many existing trees as possible. This was achieved through careful planning and close discussions with the design team and client. The netting design was reviewed in collaboration with an experienced architectural rigging team, resulting in a solution that exceeded the original specification without additional cost to the client.

Latent soil conditions also caused delays, as all excavation had to be carried out by hand to avoid damaging tree roots and underground services. To meet the original completion date, works were accelerated so the animals could return to the enclosure on schedule. Certain large components were delivered as design-and-construct, requiring active project management input to achieve the client’s original vision.

A new walkway through the display area was constructed entirely from recycled jarrah, with special consideration to construction methods to ensure animal safety. Working within a live zoo environment required measures to protect the public and strict adherence to infectious disease policies, as well as close coordination with zoo staff to prevent any disruption to surrounding exhibits.
